Mother honours daughter at the 2008 Scotiabank Toronto Waterfront 5k

Getting involved with TEAM EPILEPSY was something Leonie (left of photo) felt she had to do for many reasons.  She wanted to raise awareness and money for epilepsy.  But, most of all, she wanted to honour her daughter Andrea, whose life was tragically cut short by SUDEP, at only 24 years of age.

Even though Leonie's grief was raw, having lost Andrea just six months earlier, she wanted to pay tribute to her daughter's spirit - her determination, love and vibrancy - and set herself the challenge to complete the walk.  "It was difficult, but I realized that I couldn't just sit and grieve.  I needed to do something that would make a difference." Leonie said.  She recruited support by enrolling her family to walk alongside her and enlisted family and friends to help raise funds.

That September morning, the day of the race, Leonie was amazed.  "It was incredible!" she said.  "I couldn't believe the amount of people there, especially supporting epilepsy.  It was so touching and I was very glad I did it."
